Hot topics in lipids: Let's discuss novel LDL-C equations and lipoprotein(a)

Overview

Calculated LDL-C and Lp(a) are hot topics. Novel equations for LDL-C have greatly improved accuracy of calculated results. But what concentrations are most improved with new equations? How will it improve patient management? Additionally, novel therapeutics in clinical trials spotlighted the need to identify the 20% of the population with high Lp(a) at increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. However, most have never been tested, and testing isn't standardized. The complexity of this biomarker challenges both laboratory measurements and clinical decision making. This workshop aims to 1) persuade you it's time to retire the Friedewald equation and 2) delineate testing for Lp(a).
