Deficiencies identified during accreditation inspections of point-of-care (POC) laboratories are often perceived as ‘negative’ or punitive. This course shifts that perspective, reframing deficiencies as critical opportunities for program improvement. This course is structured into Units, each focusing on common POCT deficiencies by topic area. We will provide a practical, hands-on approach to build awareness, enhance comprehension, and discuss effective strategies for resolving frequent laboratory deficiencies identified by regulatory and accreditation agencies. The course features interactive, “table team” activities to foster engagement and encourage active participation from all attendees, including those new to the field. Each Unit’s tabletop exercise is designed to: (1) simulate common POC testing inspection scenarios, (2) discuss optimal courses of action and effective pivoting strategies, and (3) promote collaborative problem-solving beyond ordinary deficiency resolution. Facilitated panel discussions will include real-world examples and relevant case studies.

After participating in this course, participants will be able to:
Ms. Mann will welcome participants, introduce faculty, and provide an overview of the agenda. This opening segment will include a brief review of using the ADLM Mobile app, with a few demonstration polls to familiarize participants with its functionality. Additional polling will be used to introduce faculty to the audience and to better understand participant roles and backgrounds.
Ms. Mann will serve as facilitator and primary presenter for this faculty panel discussion focused on deficiencies related to personnel and competency assessment. Discussion topics will include personnel qualifications and responsibilities across laboratory roles, strategies for assessing competency for waived and non‑waived testing complexity (including the six required components of competency assessment), documentation requirements for competency assessment, and written policies addressing failed competency and corrective action plans. Deficiencies related to PPMP personnel qualifications and responsibilities will also be addressed.
Ms. Mumford will facilitate this panel discussion and serve as the primary presenter. Discussion will focus on deficiencies related to quality management systems, including compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements for quality assurance activities, documentation of compliance, error management, corrective action processes, and the importance of consistent follow up to ensure corrective actions remain effective.
Ms. David will facilitate this panel discussion and serve as the primary presenter. Discussion will focus on deficiencies related to proficiency testing, including consistent application of institutional policies, maintaining alignment with regulatory and accreditation requirements, challenges specific to POCT, documentation of investigations and corrective actions for proficiency testing failures, and management of alternative proficiency testing methods.
Ms. Keeler will facilitate this panel discussion and serve as the primary presenter. This unit will address a variety of operational challenges not covered in earlier units, including communication strategies such as navigating critical conversations and facilitating interdisciplinary point-of-care committees. Additional topics may include determining staffing needs, correction of test results (instrument versus manual entry), selection of quality indicators aligned with CAP standards, addressing demonstrated performance gaps such as operator testing errors, IT challenges including downtime, security, and cybersecurity, use of project management tools, selection of new instrumentation, and strategies for supporting direct care staff performing POCT.
