Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how rapid assays can become a critical part of healthcare, allowing fast and accurate point-of-care results by untrained users. However, the pandemic also highlighted the importance of being able to use a wide variety of sample types to allow for screening, diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment monitoring. Porous plastics have emerged as an important tool in the developer’s tool kit, providing a physically robust material that can be used in sample collection, sample treatment, conjugate release, and absorption — in many ways a replacement for more traditional materials like glass fiber or cellulose. This session will review the significance of different sample types for the new generation of rapid diagnostic assays, along with the correct materials to choose and how to optimize the performance using porous plastics in collection and test devices.
